Our Obligation to Pray for Persecuted Christians

Our Obligation to Pray for Persecuted Christians

Christians around the world are suffering for their belief in Jesus Christ as militant Islamists have declared a Global War on Christians. Over 100,000 are martyred annually and this militant movement is making dangerous inroads in the great democracies of Europe and U.S.

Franklin Graham, Director of Samaritan’s Purse, in a special issue of Decision Magazine, “Radical Islam’s Global War on Christians” says “the Arab Spring has become the Christian’s winter.”

In Iraq, at least 14 youths were recently stoned to death for wearing western-style clothes and haircuts. Little attention has been given to the fact that dozens of churches have been bombed and many of Iraqi’s Christians have fled to Syria to escape persecution only to be caught in the middle of another bloodbath.

In the Sudan a Bible School was bombed on the first day of school and Christians have been killed or driven from their homes and towns.

In Pakistan radical Muslim youth opened fire upon a Salvation Army open air prayer meeting killing two and injuring two more. Also, the only Christian cabinet member of Pakistan was martyred last year.

In Nigeria churches have been bombed, including an attack on several churches on Christmas Day, and again in February, and radicals have been successful to impose Sharia law in 12 northern Nigerian states.

In Iran hundreds of Christians are now imprisoned for their faith and many have been executed. Since 2009,Youcef Nadarkhani, pastor of a church of about 400 people, a 34 yr. old father of 2 children, has been imprisoned and sentenced to die because he will not renounce Christ. The only reason he has not been hanged is because his case has drawn world-wide attention.

In the United States of America the scheduled speaker for West Point National Prayer Breakfast in February 2012, Gen. William G. Boykin, 36 year Army veteran who commanded the rescue efforts of American hostages in Iran in 1980 and a committed Christian who was critical of Islam, withdrew as speaker due to pressure from the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Two years ago the same pressure was used to cause Franklin Graham to be disinvited from speaking at the Pentagon on the National Day of Prayer. We’re in a battle! Where are the prayer-warriors?

Family Worship

	Simplify Family Worship

A man who is like a spiritual father to me began what he called a "family altar" with his wife before they were married, and has faithfully continued the practice through the arrival of children and grandchildren for more than fifty years. Sadly, it seems that few men among even the best evangelical churches today could speak of daily family worship in their home. In the minds of some, active church involvement eliminates the need for family worship. For others, Bible reading, prayer, and singing praises to God together as a family have been crowded out by the television, the Internet, and a non-stop schedule that makes even meals together a rarity.

But the father (and in his absence, the mother) of the family has the responsibility from God to provide spiritual leadership for his household. As He did with Abraham, the Lord wants every father to "command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord" (Genesis 18:19). Each one should raise his children "in the training and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). Every husband should love his wife as Christ loves His bride—the church—and follow Christ's example of washing his wife with "the washing of water by the word" of God (Ephesians 5:26).

While it isn't the only way, the simplest method of applying all these texts in a steady, practical way is through daily family worship. This is how generations of Christians have understood them. For instance, both Baptists and Presbyterians in the 1600s saw this biblical teaching, and incorporated identical language about the expectation of family worship into the most influential confessional statements in their respective histories. To this day, many churches still maintain (at least officially) that, "God is to be worshipped everywhere in spirit and truth; as in private families daily."

Somehow, though, many men have gotten the idea that family worship is complicated, or that it requires time-consuming preparation. But it need not require any more preparation than your personal worship of God. And the entire experience can be reduced to three simple elements: read, pray, sing.

	Read.

The centerpiece of family worship is the Bible. Read a passage of appropriate length for your family, making any impromptu comments that come to mind. Those with younger children should emphasize the narrative portions of Scripture, and possibly the Proverbs. Eventually, most seem to work up to about a chapter a day, reading consecutively through a particular book of the Bible. I recommend that you ask a few questions to determine comprehension, or just ask the children to repeat what they remember.

	Pray.

Let the words of the passage you read suggest matter for prayer. The husband/father should pray, and perhaps one or all the rest of the family members. Most days this will be brief.

	Sing.

Use a hymnal and sing a cappella, or sing along to a recording, or let a family musician lead the way. Sing as little as one verse, or for as long as the family enjoys it.

Any order of "read, pray, sing" is fine. It doesn't have to be long to be effective. Be patient with the interest and attention span of the younger ones. Remember that you're not only fulfilling a responsibility to God by leading family worship, you're also introducing your children to Him. In these moments together, your children can see your love for God and for His Word, and some of the most teachable moments of their childhood will occur. So start family worship in your home today. It doesn't matter when you have worship. For some, early morning is best. For others, it's mealtime, and for still others, it's bedtime. Just start. Whether you've been married fifty years or newly engaged, just start. Keep it simple, and keep it up.

	_______________

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Our children are faced with a multiplicity of gods on a daily basis. In school, from the media, in books, they're taught that all roads lead to heaven; believe what you want and it will be true for you. These dangerous lies are drawing our kids away from the truth—that Jesus, the Rock of Ages, is the way, the truth, and the life! With Gold Rush, kids will learn the answer to that most important question Jesus asks: "Who do you say that I am?" They'll be saturated with the truth as they discover the biblical responses to questions such as:

Is Jesus the only way to heaven?

Who did Jesus say He is?

What was unique about Jesus's birth, life, death, and Resurrection?

 How can I be saved?

How can I share the good news of Jesus's life-changing power?

On Day 1, children will be challenged to meet Jesus in a fresh and new way as they learn about the bold claims Jesus made about Himself, including that He is God, He is the only way to heaven, and He can forgive sins. While briefly examining thoughts from famous thinkers and religious founders, children will realize Jesus is unique and superior to all others.

Day 2—Children will learn that Jesus's birth was like no other, from the fulfilled prophecies to the spectacular events. The events surrounding His birth provide further confirmation that He is God. When realizing the wonder of His birth, our response should be to treasure Jesus and treat Him as the King of our lives.

Day 3—The miracles of Jesus are a wonder to behold! Children will learn that no one has ever taught like Jesus or had the power of Jesus. When confronted with His radical teachings and the power He demonstrated as He performed miracles, our response should be to follow Him and let Him be our guide!

Day 4—Children will learn that Jesus's death and resurrection separate Him from all false religions and teachers. False religions have dead leaders and advocate working your way to heaven. Jesus's unique death and resurrection, on the other hand, is the crowning event in all of history, providing us with the opportunity to receive the gift of eternal life apart from works. The children will hear that He did this for them, and He wants them to believe in Him and receive Him as Lord and Savior.

Day 5—Children will learn that, just as God changed the disciples' lives, George Mueller's life, Gladys Aylward's life, and the lives of many others, He wants to change their lives, too. Then He wants them to share the good news of their changed lives with others.

Filled with the rich content you've come to love with previous Answers VBS programs, Gold Rush provides the fun and excitement your kids will love! From games to snacks to crafts to Bible time, all parts of this VBS work together to teach your children about the one and only Rock of Ages! Gather your gear and join us for unforgettable discoveries!
